Frequently Asked Questions

1.    I never drove a car in my life, how many driving lessons do I need before I am deemed competent and ready for the drive skill test?

You are required to complete at least 120 hours of supervised driving training. It is difficult to ascertain how long a learner takes to become competent. For best results and for your safety, practice more than 120 hours under different traffic conditions, completing an hour each alternate day. Ensure you practice at least 10 hours of night driving too. Check with Vicroads for standard requirements for Learner drivers.

2.    For each driving lesson there is a fee I am paying to the driving school. What does it cover?

The fee you pay covers fetching you from a suitable location e.g. your home, railway station etc, teaching you the methods of driving and skills, petrol, insurance, administration cost, sending you back and most importantly your safety.

3.    Do you guarantee me passing the drive test?

NO, we teach you right driving skills and cover all standard requirements for you to become a competent driver. The test is conducted and assessed by a Vicroads testing officer and he/she will evaluate your competency. Our advice to you, do not rush for a drive test, ensure you practice a lot and be safe on the road first.

4.    Can I go alone for the drive test using my car?

Yes, you can, ensure you have all the documents Vicroads needs to prove your eligibility to drive and a road worthy car which is suitable for testing conditions. Remember there are certain models that cannot be used for solo drive test, check with Vicroads first. Check with your car insurance company if it covers any accident while the drive test.

5.    Is there any benefit having a instructor accompany me for the drive test?

Yes, the instructor provides a road worthy car and sits beside you but provides no assistance during the test. You as the learner can fully concentrate on the road and if there is a life-threatening mistake you make, the instructor can intervene and stop the test.

AT the end of the test session your instructor can evaluate and correct you where applicable. If you do not make it in the test, the instructor can continue to practice your weak points again.

6.    I want my son to drive, but the 120 hours of supervised training will cost me a bomb, what should I do to cut cost from the driving lessons?

You do not have to engage a driving instructor for the full length of the 120 hours, start off with a driving instructor until your son is confident, then you as the parent can continue to supervise his driving. When he is ready get the same instructor to polish his driving skills further and prepare for the test. You will be surprised how much you can save. Remember do not compromise safety for money and ensure your son completes at least 120 hours of supervised driving.
