DRIVE TEST TIPS

01/Disclaimer

The following information is for guidance purposes only based on our experience and cannot be considered as strict rules or conditions. Please check relevant agencies eg. Vicroads in the governance of a drive test and compliance. For details, it is recommended that learner drivers obtain the latest information from the Vicroads website.

02/Documentation 

 You must bring along:

- local driving license (LDL) 

- overseas driving licenses (ODL) if applicable.  

If you have an ODL, Please bring the following documents:

 1. Passport

 2. Proof of address

 3. Medicare card, and

 4. Bank Cards

If you are below 21 years old and have a log book, ensure that the log book is fully completed including consistent signatures on relevant pages.

IF you have a digital log book, please check for eligibility with Vicroads, well before your drive test.

Your Learner’s License and Hazard Perception Test results must be valid and has not expired.

03/At the Vicrods Office - FAQ

1.Is your driving license still valid or has it being suspended ? Ensure your driving license is valid and is not suspended by the police.

2.If you have an Overseas driving license, you will be asked when was it first issued? In order to obtain a full Victorian driving license, your Overseas driving license must be valid for more than 3 years.

3.Do you have any pre-existing medical condition e.g. diabetics or HBP that can affect your driving? If you have any medical conditions, you need to first obtain a medical clearance letter from your GP.

4.Are you still living in the same address?

5.If you don't have a Victorian leaner license, you must bring along a proof of address letter or document.

6.You need to pass an eye chart test. If you use any visual aid devices eg. spectacles or contact lenses, please ensure you have them on.

04/At the Vicroads Car Park

Before the tester arrives, be seated in the car with your seatbelts fastened and keep the car on accessory mode. Do not start the car yet.

Select the turn signal stalk to Indicate left then right, turn on the lights to low beam, then high beam followed by  the hazard lights.

Apply the brake to indicate all the rear red lights are working.

Demonstrate the use of wipers and washers.

Show where the front and rear demisters are located including the hand brake.

When everyone is safely seated, make sure you start the car before engaging gear or releasing the hand brake.

Engage the appropriate gear, release the handbrake and drive at the speed allowed in the car park.

05/Maintain Speed

Know the difference between advisory speed and regularity speed signs.

Throughout your drive test, maintain at least 5km/h slower from the maximum speed.

If your drive test is within school times on school days, school speed limits strictly applies in all school zones.

There are also permanent 40km/h speed zones, drive at about 35km/h in these zones.

Where there are road works, speed is generally 40km/h if displayed, drive at about 35km/h in these areas.

Approach all intersections slowly, DO NOT rush, look several times before turning into the main road.

When turning left or right, maintain an average speed of about 20km/h.

06/Stage 1

Look at the rear/central mirror once about every 30-40 seconds during your drive test.

Before applying the brakes, look at the rear/central mirror first.

Before indicating left, look at the rear/central mirror followed by the left external mirror.

Before indicating right, look at the rear/central mirror followed by the right external mirror.

Approach all intersections slowly, DO NOT rush, look several times before turning into the main road.

Take a little angle to the left or right when turning left or right appropriately.

While turning DO NOT hit or rub against the side kerb.

The moment you finish a turn observe what speed applies on the new road.

If you miss a street, just continue driving, you will be instructed to re-route.

When driving in narrow streets where possible keep 1.5m away from parked vehicles.

When stopping or slowing down behind a parked vehicle, or when you are overtaking a parked or slow moving vehicle you need to look at mirrors first, indicate right and check your blind spot before overtaking.

You will be required to either do a reverse parallel park or a three-point turn.

Indicate left first before approaching the parked vehicle to commence parallel reverse park.

Indicate left first to pull over the left before commencing the 3-point turn.

At the end of Stage I, pull over to stop beside the kerb by indicating left first.

07/Stage 2

When approaching a STOP sign intersection , stop completely just before the STOP LINE for 3 seconds.

Before entering the Median Strip, observe all sides and when safe drive into the Median Strip.

Be vigilant at Traffic Lights intersections especially when turning right with or without the green arrow light.

When changing lanes or moving more than a meter to the left or right, ensure you look into the appropriate blind spot before changing lanes.

When approaching roundabouts, lookout for vehicles in the round about or vehicles approaching close to you from the right.

08/After your Drive Test

Await the tester to announce the results of the drive test.
